The fishing down on the Chesapeake Bay is really heating up. It’s been a cold spring, but the bass don’t seem to mind. Water temps are hovering around the low to mid 40’s. There is an abundance of bait up in the bay right now including; yellow perch, shad and herring. The bass are feeding up and will start positioning themselves in a pre-spawn pattern very soon.
Baits like the Silver Buddy have been effective in the cold water. As the water slowly warms, techniques like crankbaits, chatterbaits and jigs begin to shine. Bass have been relating to hard cover like rocky banks and docks and will continue to relate to this type of structure until the grass gets a little taller. The weather has been cold but the bass big and fishing is hot down on the Chesapeake.
